AutoUtility is an open, independent automotive data portal designed to make official United States automotive safety, defect, and energy records easily accessible, readable, and comparable for consumers, researchers, and vehicle owners.

Across the automotive industry, critical consumer information is frequently dispersed across disparate government repositories, siloed legacy interfaces, and unstandardized databases. AutoUtility aggregates, normalizes, and structures these records into an intuitive, high-speed hierarchy covering 35 automotive makes and 206 vehicle model families from 2020 through 2025.

2. Why AutoUtility Exists

Automotive purchasing, maintenance, and safety decisions require objective, verifiable facts. Unfortunately, mainstream automotive web resources are often heavily influenced by sponsored manufacturer placements, subjective editorial reviews, dealership lead-generation funnels, and algorithmic ranking manipulation.

AutoUtility was built with a fundamentally different philosophy:

  • Zero Editorial Bias: We do not publish subjective vehicle reviews, "car of the year" awards, or qualitative opinions.
  • Zero Paid Manufacturer Influence: Automotive manufacturers cannot pay to remove defect complaints, conceal safety recalls, or artificially boost safety ratings.
  • Deterministic Government Data: 100% of our safety metrics, defect numbers, recall campaigns, and fuel economy numbers are programmatically derived from official federal agency filings.

All records presented on AutoUtility originate from primary United States government public domain data:

An operating administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation responsible for vehicle safety standards, defect investigations, and recall oversight.
Datasets ingested: Owner Consumer Defect Complaints, Official Safety Recall Campaigns, Technical Defect Descriptions, Free Dealer Remedies, and 5-Star New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) Crash Test Ratings.
2. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) / FuelEconomy.gov
The federal regulatory agency responsible for vehicle emissions certification and standardized fuel economy testing in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy.
Datasets ingested: Laboratory dynamometer fuel economy ratings (City / Highway / Combined MPG), annual fuel cost estimates, tailpipe CO₂ emissions, and powertrain specifications.

For every qualifying passenger vehicle model year, AutoUtility generates four distinct deep-dive perspectives:

  • Model-Year Overview: High-level scorecard summarizing overall safety star ratings, total recall counts, complaint frequencies, and EPA MPG ranges.
  • Owner Defect Complaints: Itemized, component-by-component breakdown of consumer defect reports filed directly with federal safety regulators, including crash, fire, and injury tallies.
  • Safety Recall Campaigns: Complete catalog of official safety recalls on file with NHTSA, outlining affected components, safety hazard descriptions, and manufacturer remedy instructions.
  • Crash Safety Ratings (NCAP): 5-Star laboratory crash test results evaluating frontal barrier impacts, side barrier collisions, side pole impacts, rollover resistance risk, and active driver assistance technology.

AutoUtility is an independent private data project. AutoUtility is not an agency of the United States Government and is not affiliated with, operated by, sponsored by, or endorsed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Transportation (DOT), the Department of Energy (DOE), or any automobile manufacturer.

6. Government Updates & Safety Verification

Federal automotive records are updated continuously as new safety recalls are initiated, investigations conclude, and owner complaints are submitted. While AutoUtility runs periodic automated data ingestion cycles, safety-critical actions—such as checking for uncompleted safety recalls on a specific vehicle—should always be verified using your vehicle's 17-character VIN directly at NHTSA.gov/recalls.
